Natural-looking dentures

If you’ve lost individual, many, or all of your teeth, dentures are often the solution to restore your smile. Are you missing teeth? One or more? Give North Babcock Dental Care a call! We always welcome new patients and will discuss your options with you and answer all your questions to determine the best treatment for your smile.

Complete dentures and partial dentures are the two most common kinds of dentures, both of which restore missing teeth to give you back enjoyment of eating a wide range of your favorite nutritious foods and regain full confidence in talking, smiling, and even laughing out loud.

Partial Dentures – Also called “removable dentures,” partial dentures are used when a few adjacent teeth are missing or when nearby teeth aren’t able to support a bridge. The denture, made up of one or more artificial teeth, fits snugly, secured by clasps that attach to your existing teeth. After meals and at night, partial dentures are easily removed for cleaning.

ROOT CANAL THERAPY

Endodontics, which is commonly known as root canal therapy, is the branch of dentistry that focuses on diseases and injuries of dental pulp, the soft tissues inside every tooth. Its purpose is to save a natural tooth, heal infection, and to relieve pain.

Did you know that more than 14 million teeth receive endodontic treatment each year? By choosing endodontic treatment, you are making the decision to keep your natural teeth, which is really important as it gives you the ability to…

  • Chew a variety of foods so that you don’t have to give up your favorites and so that you receive a full range of nutrition – no compromising due to discomfort and inability to chew

  • Bite cleanly and confidently – no avoiding foods, especially in public, which allows you to relax and enjoy meals in the company of friends and colleagues

  • Speak clearly and without pain

  • Laugh with ease and confidence – no more covering your mouth due to the embarrassment of discolored teeth or pain.

Beneath the hard enamel exterior of your tooth, there is a canal that contains what we call “pulp” – the soft interior of the tooth. Pulp is made up of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. Because the pulp does most of its work during tooth development, its job is pretty much done by the time you are an adult. That’s why, fortunately, adult teeth can survive just fine without pulp. They do this by drawing nutrients from surrounding tissues. And that’s why, when tooth pulp becomes inflamed or infected, often the choice of treatment includes removing the remaining pulp and along with it, the infection.

Cleanings & Prevention

A preventive program is a cooperative effort by the patient, dentist, and dental staff to preserve the natural dentition and supporting structures by preventing the onset, progress, and recurrence of dental diseases and conditions.

Preventing dental disease starts at home with good oral hygiene and a balanced diet. It is continued in the dental office by the efforts of your dentist and dental hygienist to promote, restore, and maintain your oral health.

Prevention also includes regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays. Sealants and fluoride are also great preventive treatments that help protect the teeth.

Prevention helps avoid serious and costly dental problems and is the key to having a healthy, confident, beautiful smile.

Immediate Dentures – Should you require tooth extraction prior to being fitted for dentures, immediate dentures are used while your gums heal. You’re able to wear them immediately and throughout the healing process until your mouth is ready to be fitted for complete dentures.

Full Dentures – Also called “complete dentures,” you likely visualize these when you hear the word dentures. Used when all of your natural teeth are missing, the denture supports a full arch of replacement teeth. For cleaning, they’re removable as they’re secured by suction.

How To Care For Your Dentures – To keep them clean, free from stains, and looking just like your natural teeth, your complete or partial dentures do require thorough, regular, and proper care. Cleaning also prevents plaque buildup which can cause tartar deposits, bad breath, decay of remaining teeth, gum disease, and more.

  • Deep Decay – When many people think of cavities, they think of them as only affecting the surface of a tooth or tooth root. But what can happen if the decay is not detected and removed and the resulting damage repaired, is that the decay will continue to spread, reaching the interior of the tooth. When it does, the infection begins to involve the nerve and surrounding tissues, causing inflammation, further infection, and pain.

  • Tooth Fractures – Many of us have fine vertical cracks on the surface of our teeth. They’re called craze lines. They are very superficial and are not serious – they don’t affect the health or function of teeth and require no treatment. But when the cracks are fractures – actual breaks in the hard enamel that protects the inner tooth pulp – that’s where root canal therapy comes in as the sensitive nerve is exposed to bacteria in the mouth, food, and varying extreme temperatures (when you drink hot coffee or eat cold ice cream, for example). The result is pain. When a tooth fracture originates in the tooth root, it may not be noticeable to you until infection in the bone or gums sets in.

  • Trauma/Injury – If a tooth sustains trauma (for example, impact during sports or severe decay), the tooth nerve may die. When this happens, the pulp inside the tooth needs to be removed and replaced with a filler to save it and prevent tooth loss.

  • CBCT Scanner: A CBCT scanner provides our dentists with detailed images of your teeth, gums, nerve pathways, and blood vessels using 3D technology. As such, we're able to place your dental implant while minimizing the impact on its surrounding structures.

  • Intraoral Scanner: As a way for our dentist and you to view a moving, colored image of your smile, we use an intraoral scanner. By projecting a light source onto an area, we can take vivid images and pull them up on a monitor for you to view.

  • Computer-Guided Surgery: This form of technology allows more precise oral surgery. The primary benefit of computer-guided surgery is planning and performing the procedure with increased certainty and accuracy.

To keep them clean, free from stains, and looking just like your natural teeth, your complete or partial dentures do require thorough, regular, and proper care. Cleaning also prevents plaque buildup which can cause tartar deposits, bad breath, decay of remaining teeth, gum disease, and more.

Benefits of wearing dentures

  • Control over your diet – When you are missing teeth, either just one or all, it can impact what foods you’re physically able to eat. Imagine chewing nuts without molars. Try biting into a juicy apple with no front teeth. With dentures, you can eat your favorite foods.

  • Better nutrition – When you don’t have to worry about how to chew your food, your selection of foods become broader and with that, you naturally in ingest a wider range of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and more!

  • Social confidence – It’s true! People with dentures gain wonderful confidence to smile naturally and laugh out loud when their moved to do so. Dentures allow you to remove that damper on your expressions!

  • Return of facial structure – When people are missing teeth, you’ll notice a common characteristic in appearance. Dentures help fill out the cheeks, maintaining a healthful look (which of course also comes from increased confidence).

  • Evens out the workload – Dentures support your remaining natural teeth by helping with the work of eating and speaking. When you’re missing teeth, pressure is unevenly distributed, making more work for the teeth you do have, possibly putting them at risk.

Denture cleaning routine

  1. Remove and rinse dentures after eating. Rinse with water to remove food particles. Handle them carefully to ensure you don't bend or damage the plastic or the clasps when cleaning.

  2. Brush your dentures with a denture brush or soft-bristle toothbrush using a denture cleaner or mild soap. Regular toothpaste is too abrasive, so avoid using it on your dentures. With a light touch, be sure to get under the clasps. Rinse with clear water.

  3. Before placing dentures back in your mouth, clean your mouth to remove plaque (that builds up on all surfaces) and massage your gums. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your gums, tongue, cheeks, palate, and any teeth that you may have. Floss between your natural teeth too.

  4. Overnight, remove and gently clean your dentures as above, then soak them in warm water. When your dentures are made, we’ll talk with you about if and when to use an over-night denture cleanser.Tip: Whenever you are not wearing your denture, always soak them in water to prevent the plastic from drying out or warping.

  5. In the morning, rinse dentures thoroughly before putting them back in your mouth, especially if using a denture-soaking solution.

  6. As careful as you may be with your dentures, damage may happen – broken clasps, cracks, etc. – and they will need to be repaired. Just call us at (210) 361-0246.

Dentures will also need what we call “relines.” Because your gums and bones are always changing, your dentures will need to be adjusted to ensure they always fit properly for optimal function and aesthetics. As your dentist in San Antonio, we’ll help you determine the best schedule for your smile. We’ll also schedule a professional dentures exam and professional cleaning.

And remember, even if you wear complete dentures, you always need to come for your regular six-month (minimum) exam and hygiene visit so that we can continue to monitor for signs of disease, tooth decay, oral cancer, or infection.

Because dentures restore your smile and your confidence, we hope you’ll talk to us about your needs, because at North Babcock Dental Care, we can help!

  • Severe pain when chewing – you may find yourself chewing on only one side of your mouth, or worse yet, modifying your diet to soft foods only

  • Pain that becomes worse when you bite – you may find yourself avoiding food as much as possible

  • Sensitivity to cold and hot foods and drinks – again, you may modify your diet to the exclusion of nutrients and development of dehydration

  • Sore gums which may be a constant irritant and bring continual discomfort

  • Discolored gums

  • Small pimple-like bumps on your gums due to infection.

FINDING YOUR IDEAL RESTORATION

Once your dental implant has successfully fused to your jawbone, we'll place one of our restorative options to complete your smile. We'll discuss which of our restorations is right for you during the initial planning phase. Our dentist will thoroughly explain each option and its benefits.

  • CEREC® Crown: If you're missing a single tooth, a CEREC crown may be the perfect option for you. Using CEREC technology, we're able to provide you with a new crown in a single visit. This makes it easy to get the dental care you deserve if you have a hectic schedule. Each crown is made of a sturdy and lifelike ceramic and is color-matched to look natural within your smile. Our dentist can make any necessary adjustments for a snug fit and natural feel during your fitting.

  • Bridges: Bridges are an effective way to replace multiple teeth in a row. We match our implant-supported bridges to the color of your neighboring teeth for a seamless appearance. We'll take detailed impressions of your teeth and send them to a trusted lab for crafting. Typically, a bridge requires two implant posts to support it at each end.

  • Dentures: Implant-supported dentures pair the benefits of implants with the comfort of dentures. This restorative option replaces up to an entire arch of missing teeth.

OUR EXCELLENT PRETREATMENT OPTIONS

Our dentist may deem it necessary for you to undergo pretreatment before receiving your dental implants. We're proud to offer various pretreatment options in our office so that you don't have to be referred out. We can discuss including one or multiple pretreatment options in your dental implant treatment plan during our initial visit.

  • Bone Grafts: A weak or brittle jawbone can create an unstable foundation for your dental implant. That's why we offer skilled bone grafts to improve your jawbone density. As a result, your dental implant can fit securely in your mouth. Our dentist can strengthen areas that lack volume by transplanting a small amount of bone to your upper or lower jaws.

  • Extractions: If your tooth is severely decayed or damaged, extraction may be necessary for dental implant placement. Our team provides gentle extractions, including wisdom teeth removal. Once your tooth has been removed, you can move forward with the dental implant process.

At North Babcock Dental Care, when we consider endodontic therapy for you, we have two main goals: (1) to get you out of pain quickly and permanently, and (2) to save your tooth.

Why we want to relieve your pain immediately is easily understood! But why are we so focused on saving your tooth? It’s because when you’re missing a tooth, the neighboring teeth mustwork harder to help you chew and bite, and the extra stress may cause them to fracture. Remaining teeth will also drift into the gap left behind by the missing tooth, negatively affecting the way your teeth and jaws fit together, which can cause jaw and face pain, difficulty eating and speaking, and more!

We know that for some people, endodontics or root canal therapy has a bad reputation, but we can guarantee that’s a hangover from days long gone. At North Babcock Dental Care, we ensure your comfort. Before your treatment, we’ll always discuss sedation options with you and help you to choose the one that works best for you.

When endodontic treatment is complete, you’ll be out of pain and your beautiful smile will return. Homecare doesn’t change – brush twice a day and floss once a day like you already do.

If you have questions about endodontic care, be sure to call us, your dentist in San Antonio, at (210) 361-0246.Because at North Babcock Dental Care, we want to help you enjoy every day with a pain-free, healthy, beautiful smile! Call now!
